Reddit ads vs organic Reddit marketing for SaaS marketers: what $1,000 a month buys

Reddit's own guidance is to test ads at $100 or more a day for one to two weeks, which is $700 to $1,400 before you know what works (Reddit Business, read October 24, 2026). Organic comments cost $1,000 a month with CommunityMentions and sit inside the threads that 18.9% of sourced AI answers cite (our study of 41,592 queries). Here is how SaaS marketers choose between them, or use both.

Ad spend we manage: CommunityMentions places organic comments and does not run Reddit ads

Who wrote this and how we checked

CommunityMentions sells organic comments and does not run or manage Reddit ads, so this page compares a product we sell with one we don't, and you should weigh it that way. Every ad figure comes from Reddit's own learning-hub article "Reddit Advertising Costs and How to Maximize Results" (published February 10, 2026), which we read on October 24, 2026. Reddit publishes no average cost per click on that page, and the benchmarks vendor blogs quote disagree with each other, so we give none. The 18.9% comes from our own study of 41,592 buyer-intent queries run between January 9 and July 14, 2026 on ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Reddit appeared in 6,202 of the 32,745 answers that cited at least one source. The 69 placements come from our delivery database, which checks every comment the afternoon it is posted.

Where Reddit ads still win

  • You need visitors this week. Ads put your page in front of a targeted audience as soon as a campaign is approved. A comment depends on a thread being active.
  • You have a landing page worth testing. Ads need a page that converts, and the one to two weeks of spend Reddit suggests is the price of finding out.
  • You want to choose the audience. Reddit lists targeting by communities, keywords, retargeting and lookalikes, which a comment cannot do.
  • You can fund the learning phase. At $100 a day, a full month is about $3,000 (our arithmetic from Reddit's figure), so the cheaper test is the one-to-two-week run Reddit describes.

When organic comments are the better buy

  • Buyers ask for a recommendation in a thread. A comment that names you answers the question where it is asked, in a thread that stays on the page after the day it was posted.
  • You want to show up in AI answers. In our study Reddit was the most-cited domain, ahead of YouTube at 14.4%. A comment lives on a page an engine can cite.
  • You want one predictable price. $1,000 a month covers a median of 69 verified placements across five channels. An ad budget moves with the bids.
  • You have no time for ad operations. We post, you approve the voice in Slack, and the daily report shows what went live.

What $1,000 buys in each

In ads, $1,000 at Reddit's suggested $100 a day lasts 10 days. That is inside the range Reddit calls a test, so it tells you whether the campaign can work, and it stops when the money does. In organic comments, $1,000 is one month. In the 30 days to September 28, 2026, the median CommunityMentions client brand (65 brands) got 69 verified placements across Reddit, YouTube, Medium, LinkedIn and X, 27 of them on Reddit. The comments stay in their threads after the month ends unless a moderator removes them. The two are not substitutes. Ads buy a click now; comments build the recommendation a buyer finds later. Many teams test one, then add the other.

Using both

A workable order for a SaaS team with a single product: start the free sample to see the comments we would post for your site, and run a small ad test in the same weeks, sized to Reddit's one-to-two-week guidance. Keep the ad test if the cost per result is below what a customer is worth to you. Keep the comments if the threads they sit in start appearing in the AI answers and searches your buyers use. Our Reddit marketing pricing guide lists what 16 services charge, and our guide to Reddit marketing for SaaS shows where 8,047 comments for B2B software brands were placed.

Frequently asked questions

How much do Reddit ads cost?

Reddit ads run on an auction and charge you when someone takes the action you bid on. Reddit suggests a budget of at least 3 times your target cost per result and a test of $100 or more a day for one to two weeks, which is $700 to $1,400 (Reddit Business, read October 24, 2026).

Are Reddit ads worth it for a SaaS company?

It depends on whether a test shows a cost per result below what a customer is worth to you. Reddit recommends a 2 to 3 week learning phase before judging. Benchmark numbers from vendor blogs disagree, so use your own test.

Do Reddit ads help you appear in ChatGPT or Google AI answers?

We have no data showing they do. In our study of 41,592 queries, Reddit was cited in 18.9% of the 32,745 answers that cited sources, and the cited pages are threads and subreddit pages.

Does CommunityMentions run Reddit ads?

No. CommunityMentions places organic comments on Reddit, YouTube, Medium, LinkedIn and X for $1,000 a month, and does not run or manage Reddit ads.

Can I use organic Reddit marketing and Reddit ads together?

Yes. Ads buy visits now and comments sit in the threads buyers read later. Run the free sample and a small ad test side by side, then keep whichever returns more for the money.
