How we count

A citation is one Reddit thread link that appeared as a source in one AI answer. We tracked 75,343 answers from OpenAI GPT models, Perplexity Sonar and Gemini models to the buyer-style questions we run for our clients' brands (competitor comparisons, product discovery and problem descriptions), Jan 9, 2026 to Oct 27, 2026. 18,259 of them linked at least one Reddit thread, 34,493 citations in all across 11,538 different threads.

The list keeps subreddits with 3 or more citations, which is 1,297 of the 2,881 that appeared at all. The other 1,584 were cited fewer than 3 times or are left out because they are user profile pages or have names that matched the sensitive-topic filter (health, drug, mental-health, legal-help, adult or gambling terms). Because the questions come from our clients' niches, counts lean toward the topics they sell in. Members are from our last check of each subreddit and show as "not read" where we have none. The numbers describe what these engines linked, not what any person read.

r/fragrance, with 562 citations across 165 different threads. The table above is sorted that way by default.

Why are there fewer subreddits here than the total cited?

2,881 subreddits appeared at least once in the answers we tracked. This list keeps the ones cited 3 or more times, so a single stray link does not look like a pattern, and leaves out user profile pages and subreddits whose names matched our sensitive-topic filter (health, drug, mental-health, legal-help, adult and gambling terms; 126 matched). The filter reads names only, so some health-adjacent communities with neutral names remain.

Is this every active subreddit on Reddit?

No. It covers the subreddits that came up in answers to the buyer-style questions we track for our clients, so it leans toward business, marketing, software and consumer-product topics. It tells you where AI engines linked threads, not how big or active a community is.
