How many subreddits are there?
Reddit reports over 100,000 active communities in its 2025 annual report and gives no total for every subreddit ever created. An older count, about 138,000 active of 1.2 million total, is dated July 2018 on Wikipedia. In the 78,023 AI answers we tracked, 2,918 subreddits were linked.

Every subreddit count, and where it comes from
The numbers in search results measure different things at different times, and several name no source. We read Reddit's own wording only for the first three rows.
| Count | Source | Date of the figure | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100k+ active communities | Reddit Q2 2026 shareholder letter | No as-of date; letter for the quarter ended Jun 30, 2026 | Newest Reddit count we found. The Q3 2026 letter gives none. |
| Over 100,000 active communities | Reddit 2025 annual report | No as-of date; report for 2025 | The filing does not define active. |
| Over 100,000 active subreddits, over 500 with 1 million+ subscribers | Reddit 2024 annual report | No as-of date; report for 2024 | The filing does not define active. |
| About 138,000 active of 1.2 million total | Wikipedia | Wikipedia says July 2018; in print by Apr 2018 | Over eight years old. |
| 100,000 to 200,000 active, over 3 million total | redaccs.com, a seller of Reddit accounts | Page metadata says Mar 15, 2026 | The active range is called an estimate; the 3 million total is stated flat. No source is named for either. |
One Reddit comment in search results puts the total near 3.8 million and credits a "quick google search".
Why no public count is exact
Reddit's annual report states a floor, "over 100,000", and does not define an active community. We read the whole 2025 report and found no total for every subreddit created. Its Q3 2026 shareholder letter says only that Reddit "continued to grow the number of communities", with no count.
A real total would also have to decide what counts: abandoned communities, private ones and banned ones all add to one number and leave another unchanged. Treat any exact total as an estimate unless it names its source and date.
At least 514 subreddits have a million members
Of the 994 public communities in Reddit's popular listing on Nov 4, 2026, 514 had 1 million or more members. Reddit's 2024 annual report said over 500, an older floor of the same kind. Ours is a minimum too, since a community outside the first 1,000 we read can also pass a million.
| Members | Communities |
|---|---|
| 10 million or more | 63 |
| 1 million or more | 514 |
| 100,000 or more | 985 |
| All public communities read | 994 |
The smallest community we read had 47,176 members, and the biggest, r/funny, had 67.6 million. See the full order on the most popular subreddits page. Member counts overlap, because one account can join many communities, and they include accounts that no longer visit.
Tracked AI answers linked to 2,918 subreddits
We tracked 78,023 AI answers from Jan 9, 2026 to Oct 30, 2026. They carried 35,035 links to Reddit threads, from 2,918 different subreddits. Set against Reddit's 100,000 floor, that is under 3%, for the questions we track only. It is not the share of all subreddits AI cites. The 100 most cited on our subreddit list drew 15,990 of those links (45.6%).
A brand that wants to appear in AI answers has a much shorter list than 100,000. The subreddit finder narrows it to your niche. One limit: the questions we track come from our clients' niches, so other topics would surface other communities, and the number across all questions is likely higher.
How big Reddit is in 2026
Reddit's daily active uniques averaged 130.3 million in Q3 2026, the quarter ended September 30. Reddit defines one as a user it can identify with a unique identifier who visited a page on its website or opened a Reddit app at least once in a 24-hour period.
| Measure | Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Daily active uniques, global | 130.3M | 116.0M | +12% |
| Weekly active uniques, global | 515.2M | 443.8M | +16% |
| Daily active uniques, US | 50.7M | 51.6M | -2% |
| Daily active uniques, international | 79.6M | 64.4M | +24% |
| Logged-in daily active uniques | 53.5M | 50.2M | +7% |
| Logged-out daily active uniques | 76.8M | 65.8M | +17% |
The letter puts the site at over 27 billion posts and comments. Its quarterly report says global daily active uniques were flat against Q2, with gains from marketing and other initiatives offset mainly by third-party search engine changes, and the letter warns they could fall by a low-double-digit percentage in Q4 if current trends hold.
How we count
We read Reddit's filings and each page in the first table on Nov 5, 2026. Member bands come from the first 1,000 communities in Reddit's popular-communities listing, read through its official Data API on Nov 4, 2026; the 6 that were not public are left out of the counts. AI figures come from our own tracking of answers to the buyer-style questions we follow for clients, including ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. They count links in the answers; clicks and reads are not measured. The 2,918 counts every distinct r/ name in those links, so it may include some user profiles and communities that are no longer active.

Frequently asked questions
How many subreddits are there in total?
Reddit's filings give no total. Its 2025 annual report says over 100,000 active communities. Wikipedia lists 1.2 million total, dated July 2018. Newer pages put the total above 3 million, and we found no primary source for those figures.
How many active subreddits are there?
Over 100,000, in Reddit's own words in its 2025 annual report. The filing does not define active or give an exact number. The 138,000 figure on many pages was in print by April 2018, and Wikipedia dates it to July 2018.
Which is the largest subreddit?
Of the communities in Reddit's popular listing, r/funny has the most members: 67,646,689 on Nov 4, 2026. r/announcements, Reddit's archived official announcements community, counted more (302,607,281 on Nov 4, 2026) but is not in that listing. The full ranking is on our most popular subreddits page.
Is Reddit growing or shrinking?
Both, depending on the measure. Daily active uniques averaged 130.3 million in Q3 2026, up 12% from a year earlier, while the US figure fell 2% to 50.7 million. The global figure was flat against Q2, and Reddit said it could fall by a low-double-digit percentage in Q4 if current trends hold.
How many subreddits do AI answers cite?
2,918 different subreddits appeared in the 35,035 Reddit thread citations we counted across 78,023 tracked AI answers, Jan 9, 2026 to Oct 30, 2026. That covers the questions we track, not every question.
