Members and popular order read Nov 4, 2026. Popular order is the community's place in Reddit's popular listing that day. AI citations count the times ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini answers linked a thread from the community, Jan 9, 2026 to Oct 30, 2026; "under 3" means fewer than 3. Since is the year the community was created. 6 bigger communities are left off by the name rule in How we count.
The 100 biggest drew 3.2% of the AI citations we tracked
Of the 100 biggest communities, 33 were cited 3 or more times in the 78,023 AI answers we tracked, and together they drew 1,119 of 35,035 Reddit thread citations (3.2%). Of the 30 communities AI answers cited most, 17 are not in Reddit's popular listing of 1,000 at all. Several of the most cited are communities where people compare products, such as r/fragrance, r/Supplements and r/EngagementRings.
One limit on that reading: the questions we track come from our clients' niches (software, marketing, consumer products, cars, travel and a few more), so the counts lean toward those topics. A general community like r/funny could be cited more often for questions we do not track.

Members come from Reddit's listing on Nov 4, 2026; for communities outside it, from our subreddit data's last check. The full ranking by citations is on the subreddit list.
What the biggest subreddits have in common
They are old and general. 56 of the 100 biggest were created before 2010, and most cover a broad interest such as humor, news, games, movies or science. The 100th on this list, r/Tinder, had 6.0 million members.
A member count includes accounts that joined years ago and no longer visit. Reddit's API documentation says its popular order sorts on activity; that order puts r/Home first and r/funny, the biggest by members, at 15. Sort the table by popular order to see that ranking.
How we count
On Nov 4, 2026 we read the first 1,000 communities in Reddit's popular-communities listing through Reddit's official Data API. For each one we kept its member count, creation date and place in the listing. 6 communities that were not public are left out. NSFW and quarantined communities are left out, and so are 32 whose names fall under the rule our subreddit list uses (adult, health, drug, legal-help and profane names), which leaves 962. 6 of those left out are bigger than r/Tinder, the 100th row here. A community outside the listing does not appear here, however many members it has: r/announcements, Reddit's archived official announcements community, had 302,607,281 members when we checked on Nov 4, 2026.
AI citations come from our own tracking of ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini answers to the buyer-style questions we track for our clients' brands, the same data as the subreddit data pages. They count the links in the answers; clicks and reads are not measured. We read the listing again every week.

Frequently asked questions
What is the most popular subreddit?
Of the communities in Reddit's popular listing, r/funny has the most members: 67,646,689 on Nov 4, 2026, ahead of r/AskReddit with 60,057,263. Reddit's own popular order, which follows activity, put r/Home and r/AskReddit first that day.
Which subreddit has the most people?
Of the open communities in Reddit's popular listing, r/funny has the most members: 67,646,689 on Nov 4, 2026. r/announcements, Reddit's official announcements community, counted more (302,607,281 when we checked on Nov 4, 2026), but it is archived, takes no new posts and is not in the popular listing. The listing we read gives no count of people online, so members are the measure here, and Reddit's popular order is the nearest public reading of activity.
How many members does a subreddit need to be one of the biggest?
On Nov 4, 2026 the 100th biggest community on this list, r/Tinder, had 5,978,850 members. 6 bigger communities are left off by the name rule in How we count. The smallest of the 962 communities on this list had 47,176.
Are the biggest subreddits the ones AI answers cite?
Mostly not. Of the 100 biggest, 33 were cited 3 or more times in the 78,023 ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini answers we tracked from Jan 9, 2026 to Oct 30, 2026. Together they drew 3.2% of the 35,035 Reddit thread citations. 17 of the 30 most-cited communities are not in Reddit's popular listing at all. The questions we track lean toward our clients' niches, which favors topic communities.
Why do member counts differ from other lists?
Member counts change every day, and some widely shared lists are years old. These are the counts Reddit's Data API returned on Nov 4, 2026. Some lists also include NSFW communities; this one leaves them out, along with the profane, adult, health, drug and legal-help names our subreddit list leaves out.
Can I post my brand in the biggest subreddits?
Read each community's rules first: many limit self-promotion or links, and moderators remove posts that break them. In our tracking, the communities AI answers cite most are much smaller topic communities: the 30 most cited have a median of 563,673 members (the 24 with a count on file), against 12,731,345 for the 100 biggest. The subreddit finder lists them by niche.
