How do you do Reddit marketing without it reading as spam?

For a brand marketing on Reddit: answer the question in the thread before you name anything, name your product once among other options with a real trade-off, and leave the link out unless someone asks for it. Follow each subreddit's rules and post at a steady pace. Of 115,532 comments we scanned across 187 subreddits (our subreddit dataset), 2.5% carried a link.

The short answer

Spam on Reddit is a comment that exists to sell. A comment that reads as help answers the person who asked, in the thread's own terms, and mentions a product the way a customer would: once, next to alternatives, with a downside. Reddit's own Rule 2 says to "Abide by community rules" and "do not spam or engage in disruptive behaviors (including content manipulation)." Moderators of each subreddit add their own rules on links and self-promotion, and those are the ones that remove comments.

Steps, and what done looks like for each

#StepDone when
1Find threads where your buyer is already asking. Search Reddit and Google for the problem your product solves, not your brand name. You have 10 live threads with a question your product answers.
2Read the subreddit's rules and its last week of posts. You know whether it allows links, self-promotion and brand accounts, and what got removed.
3Answer first. Give the advice someone needs even if they never buy from you.The first two sentences help a reader who will never click anything.
4Name your product once, next to other options, with a real trade-off. If you work for the brand, say so.A reader could pick a rival from your comment and still feel helped, and nobody has to guess who you work for.
5Leave the link out unless someone asks or the rules welcome it.No URL in the comment. 2.5% of the 115,532 comments we scanned had one.
6Post at a steady pace, and never vote on your own comments or ask anyone to.No bursts of comments in one day, and no vote requests. Reddit's Rule 2 names content manipulation.
7Check a day later that the comment is still visible when you are logged out.You can see it in a private window. If not, read why and adjust.

What our data shows about links

Links are rare on Reddit, so a comment with one stands out. Of 115,532 comments we scanned across 187 subreddits (comments scanned up to October 30, 2026), 2.5% contained a link. The median subreddit was at 1.5%, and in 71 of the 187 fewer than 1 in 100 comments carried a link. r/b2bmarketing runs far higher, at 11.6%.

The Reddit threads AI answers cite on this question

When people ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini how to market on Reddit without spamming, the answers often cite Reddit threads that asked the same thing. In 78,023 AI answers we tracked from January 9 to October 30, 2026, these five threads were cited 69 times. Read them before you post: the top replies show what each community accepts.

Doing it yourself or having it done

Doing it yourself costs time: finding threads every day, reading rules, and writing replies while threads are still active. If you would rather have it done, CommunityMentions finds the threads and posts comments for you on Reddit, YouTube, Medium, LinkedIn and X for $1,000 a month, month-to-month, after a $1 setup charge. You approve the voice in Slack before anything posts, and our comments come from people with established accounts. You can read a free sample of the comments for your site first. Prices for other services are on what Reddit marketing costs.

Limits to know

  • Moderators can remove any comment from any account, and no method guarantees a comment stays up.
  • Subreddit rules change. Re-read them before each round of posting.
  • Reddit's rules apply to brands and to services working for them, ours included. Rule 5 reads: "Be authentic. You don't have to use your real name, but do not intentionally mislead others or impersonate an individual or entity in a deceptive manner."
  • Our link shares count the comments we scanned in each subreddit, not every comment ever posted there.

Frequently asked questions

Is marketing on Reddit allowed?

Reddit's rules don't ban brands. Rule 2 asks you to follow each community's rules, take part where you have a real interest, and not spam or manipulate content. Each subreddit sets its own rules on self-promotion and links, and moderators enforce them.

Should I put a link in a Reddit comment?

Usually not. Of 115,532 comments we scanned across 187 subreddits, 2.5% contained a link, so a linked comment stands out. Add one only when someone asks or the subreddit's rules welcome it.

How many Reddit comments a day is too many?

Reddit publishes no number. Bursts of comments about one product in a short time are what readers and moderators notice, so spread comments out and keep each one specific to its thread.

Why does my Reddit comment disappear?

A moderator or a subreddit's automatic filter removed it, often for a link, a new account or a self-promotion rule. Check it in a logged-out window a day later and read the subreddit's rules again.
